Accreditation

The general framework for accreditation is that the 'oversight' bodies are responsible for sanctioning accreditation agencies. Accreditation agencies, in conjunction with the state government, are responsible for accrediting specific institutions and programs.


Oversight Bodies

Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) - a private nonprofit national organization that coordinates accreditation activity in the United States. This site contains a directory of US accrediting agencies as well as a wealth of information on accreditation

Department of Education Offices of Accreditation - Basically the government version of CHEA. Note the list of accreditation organizations may differ between the government and CHEA.

Select National and Regional Accrediting Organizations Approved by either CHEA, the Department of Education or both.

Michigan "Policies and Procedures on the Establishment and Approval of Nonpublic Colleges and Universities in Michigan". These policies are almost impossible to find by navigating the web site. They are located in the Department of Labor and Economic Growth - Educational Corporations Program. I had to call originally to get the web address.

Oregon Student Assistance Commission Office of Degree Authorization This site contains valuable information concerning accreditation, fake accreditation agencies and diploma mills

Virginia State Council of Higher Education Go through Academic Officers to Policy & Guidelines to find Policies Governing Private & Out-of-state Institutions to find Institutional Certification Regulations. These regulations stipulate state requirements to start a new college in Virginia.

Washington D.C. State Education Office No, this is not a mistake. They do call it the State Education Office. With that said, As of September 2005, DC has one of the clearest and most succinct list of regulations for operating a degree-granting institution. Under Education Licensure Commission see Laws and Regulations DCMR Title 16, Chapter 21.

West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Under the "Rules and Policies" section, Series 20: Authorization of Degree Granting Institutions covers the basic state requirements for starting a new college in West Virginia.

Wyoming Department of Education Private Post-Secondary Licensing Information. This site contains links to both the forms and other information necessary to start a college in Wyoming.

American Council on Higher Education is a must for those interested in post-secondary education administration and policy. This site contains a wealth of information.
